Translation Sector in India is waiting for Government Ploicies

The role of translation industry in India, a multilingual country with 22 recognized languages as per the Indian Constitution, 15 separate scripts, lots of mother-tongues and many more dialects. We easily say that peoples of India is translating consciously during their every day communication and this have turned most of the Indians as bilingual. We can even say that India would not have been a nation without translating and the most important part is that most of the Indians keep translating almost unconsciously during their conversation with people who use non mother tongue languages such as Hindi and English.

It is noticeable, that is a country like India with such rich history of Culture and Language diversity, where most of the peoples (approx 99.5%) are unaware about the Translation Industry of India. Out of these 0.5% peoples, half considered customer of Translation Service and remaining are associated with the translation Industry directly or indirectly. This is the reality of Indian Translation Sector and most toughest part for the Indian language Service Providers.

None of the Indian Governments prioritized this sector till now. Can you image, such large diverse country with lots of recognized languages, does not have a proper Central Body to Certify a Translator or to Certify a Translation Company based on their Academics, Experience and industry specific guide lines. Can you imagine that, there is no concept of Sworn Translator in India. Before 2000 due to lack of Govt Policies, the translation sector was mostly confined to the higher educated peoples who were considered as authorized translators in India due their Academics and Higher Education and most of the translation was related to academic sections like Book Translation for publishers and journal translation for publishing.

This scenario has changed a lot and thus you can find lots of LSP (Language Service Provider Company) in the country. Lastly I must say that most of these companies are new and trying to learn the business directive from their experience only, with lack of government policy and guidelines for this Industry.
