Interesting History of Indian Languages
India is a country that is known to the world for its diversity and rich culture. Here more than 19,500 languages or dialects are spoken making it the second country where most number of languages is spoken after Papua, New Guinea.
According to the census analysis in 2011 there are 121 languages spoken by more than 10,000 people in India, whose population is around 121 crores. Hindi is the official language of India along with English. It is also the most spoken language with speakers consisting 43.63% of the total population, followed by Bengali which is spoken by 8.03% people and the Marathi, spoken by 6.86%.
There are also some classic languages spoken in India which are Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Sanskrit, Tamil and Telegu. These are the classic languages because they have been around for more than 5000 years and they are still spoken by a majority of people. Tamil is also one of the oldest languages in the world.
The Eight Schedule of our Constitution has recorded 22 languages as the schedules languages, which means these are the languages out of all that is known to the Indian people are officially acknowledged and supported. The 22 scheduled languages are Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Santhali, Maithili and Dogri.
